Body Cam Shows Cop Walk into Backyard and Shoot and Kill a Family’s Small Dog

Topeka, KS — “Josie” was a 26-pound miniature pinscher-boxer mix, who was rescued seven years ago, and became a beloved member of 72-year-old Harriette Macnish’s family.

“She was wonderful, and she loved us,” Harriette Macnish said.

This loving 7-year relationship would be violently brought to an end, however, on July 13 when Topeka Police Officer, Michael Cruse would enter the backyard of the Macnish’s home, and kill their Josie.

According to the Capital-Journal,

A Topeka officer shot the dog twice about 10:45 a.m. that day while responding to a false burglary alarm, the police department said in a news release Monday.

According to the police report, after entering the backyard, “the officer then saw a dog begin charging at him in an aggressive manner.”

The report goes on, “I attempted to place time and distance between the dog and myself by running backwards. The dog continued to aggressively run toward me to attack,” while also barking and growling.

“When the dog continued to attack toward me,” Cruse explained in his report. “I obtained my department issued Glock 9mm Model 17 from my holster and shot the dog 2 times effectively ending the imminent attack.”

The officer’s body cam caught the entire incident on video. The small 26-lb dog comes running from around the corner when she’s met with 2 shots from the officer’s pistol. The graphic video is saddening.

Macnish was home at the time the officer entered her backyard and shot her dog. After she heard the shots, she came outside to find Josie laying dead in the yard.

Macnish told the Capital-Journal that she sat there holding little Josie for half an hour after the little dog died.

“She was a wonderful watch dog — anything but fierce — but if anybody was around that she didn’t know, she made noise,” Macnish said.

Topeka Police Chief James Brown said in a press conference that the shooting of Josie was justified under current police policy, and Officer Michael Cruse was not placed on administrative leave.

After this shooting, the department is reviewing its dog killing policy. According to the new policy, “officers can only use lethal force against an animal when necessary to defend against a vicious animal when it is reasonably believed the animal poses an imminent threat of significant injury and no other reasonable means of protection is available.”

How is it that postal workers, delivery drivers, and door to door salesmen can fend off dogs on a daily basis without killing them but police officers cannot?

“You Don’t Have a Dog Anymore” Cops Take Turns Shooting Family’s Dog While Laughing

Chester, PA — Earlier this year, Christie Fry and her family rescued a 7-month old puppy with a broken leg. They named him Bear.

For several months, the family nursed Bear back to health and soon he was a normal running and jumping pup. Bear soon became a beloved member of the family. However, earlier this month, on December, 10, all that love would come to an end.

According to Fry, Bear was secured to a cable leash in his backyard when she heard him barking at the construction workers working on an abandoned house next door. Fry says that Bear was a ‘barker’, so this was nothing out of the ordinary. But when the barking was brought to a halt by the sound of gunfire, Fry panicked.

“Thank god the kids were at school,” Fry said in an interview with PuppycideDB.com

When Fry got up to see what was going on, she heard more shots. Fry recalls those frightening moments:

I hear 2 gunshots. As I’m getting up I hear the third. As soon as I’m standing, I can see out my side window. Police. Fourth shot. I look at what they’re doing & see my dog on the ground. My dog starts screaming. I scream. More shots. Five, six, seven, eight. There’s 2 cops taking turns shooting him with smiles on their faces. I run out yelling “What the hell!!!!!” They said “Is this your dog?” “Yes!!” I replied. “What happened??!!” The officer said (& I quote!!) “Well you don’t have a dog anymore. He’s done now!” & laughed in my face.

My 1yr old puppy that I did everything in my power to save was laying there dead. They shot my dog like he was a human coming at them with a gun.

In her front yard were an animal control officer and two Chester city police officers. It was unclear as to why the police were there in the first place, says Fry.

According to PuppycideDB, the animal control officer accused Bear of breaking off of his leash line and attacking him, forcing him to wrestle the dog through yard separating Fry’s property from the abandoned home next door. But Christie immediately doubted the animal control officer’s accusation:

“Bear has dug up most of my yard & the yard next door is a disaster. If this guy was on the ground wrestling with my dog as he claims, that nice fresh khaki jacket he was wearing would have been destroyed. When Bear jumped on me, even once, I’d have pawprints on my clothes. There’s just no way!”

In the associated incident report, filed by the Chester Police, there was no mention of Bear biting anyone. However, several days after the shooting, police then claimed that Bear had bitten a woman, according to Fry. But this would have been impossible as Bear was secured in the yard.

Fry has since retained an attorney and started a Go Fund Me Page to raise money for the legal fees. On the page, Fry explains:

I am in contact with a lawyer, which is why I’m starting this campaign. As I explained to them, this is not about money. This is about way more than that. Police need to stop killing our pets!!!! They need to be trained on how to deal with these situations in a better way. We are also investigating to see if there is a pattern among specific officers as there have been multiple police involved animal shootings in my area in recent years.

This needs to stop!!!!!

We the people of the United States and of Missouri demand the arrest and prosecution of four police officers under the jurisdiction of the Columbia Missouri Police Department SWAT division. Officers Roger Schlude, Michael  Cavener,Thomas Quintana and Robert Fox all participated in the intentional and unnecessary killing and cruel punishment of two domestic companion animals.

They took the life of a female Pit Bull that was wearing a pink sweater and maimed the family's Welsh Corgi. SergeantRoger Schlude admits to shooting 3 bullets in the chest of the dog instantly killing her. Officer Michael Cavener admits to shooting the dog one time and observed that the dog yelped and ran away.

OfficerRobert Fox admits to shooting the dog in her head twice instantly killing her and Thomas Quintana admits to shooting the dog 1 time in which the dog yelped and ran. Officer Robert Fox gave conflicting reports on who fired the fatal shot and they didn't even bother investigating as to who fired the bullet that blew off the foot of the now maimed Welsh Corgi, the officers investigating themselves contend that it could have been a ricochet. 

Furthermore, the officers knew that they were shooting into a home where a mother and her young child were laying helpless during the entire incident. All SWAT officers present were dressed in full-body armor and combat gear with full face masks and protective gloves but chose to fire live ammunition.

The officers have maintained their lives were put in mortal danger by both dogs, and they were forced to terrorize, inflict pain, and ultimately death upon this family's dogs. The timeline of the video footage available clearly contradicts all of the officer's official reports. We the people demand that these officers be held accountable.

Family demands answers after BSO deputy shoots pit bull

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida family is seeking accountability from the Broward Sheriff's Office after, they said, a deputy shot and killed their pet pit bull while conducting a traffic stop, Saturday night.

Eighty-one-year-old Elverna Moore wiped away tears as she recounted the moments she lost her beloved Blue. "I said, 'Oh, Lord, no, you killed my dog, you killed my dog,'" she said, "and the police just turned and walked back like he hadn't done nothing," 

Investigators said the traffic stop took place near Moore's home in the area of Northwest Third Avenue and Fourth Place, just before 9 p.m.

Moore said she went outside with Blue to see what was going on, not knowing her pet would be in danger. "It didn't have to happen," she said.

Investigators said the 3-year-old canine attacked, prompting the deputy to open fire.

"They're supposed to let you know somebody's coming. That what's she's done, and he went and shot her twice," said Moore.

Sunday afternoon, 7News cameras captured bloodstains near Moore's mailbox. "She comes up to me and say, 'Woo, woo, bark,' but she never tried to bite nobody, not ever," said the grieving owner.

BSO sent a statement to 7News that reads, "It's our process, in a shooting like this, to launch an internal affairs investigation. It's a basic procedure."

But Moore's son said that's not enough. "They were wrong. They proved to me they were wrong," said Anthony Clay. "I would like an apology, and I would like an officer, you know, reprimanded or suspended or something."

Moore agreed that an apology and punitive action would be a good place to start, and may even help them heal. "It ain't gonna bring her back by it, but it will [teach] them a lesson."

Now Moore is left with bloodstains on her sidewalk and a painful memory. "I hope this never happens to nobody, but I know he didn't have to shoot my dog," she said.
